The formula to calculate asphalt tonnage:
Tons = (Length × Width × Thickness ÷ 12) × 145 ÷ 2000
Where: 145 = lbs per cubic foot of asphalt, 2000 = lbs per ton
| Area (sq ft) | 2" Thick | 3" Thick | 4" Thick |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | 6.0 tons | 9.1 tons | 12.1 tons |
| 1,000 | 12.1 tons | 18.1 tons | 24.2 tons |
| 2,500 | 30.2 tons | 45.3 tons | 60.4 tons |
Most common type. Mixed at 300-350°F. Best durability and appearance. Used for driveways, roads, parking lots.
Mixed at 200-275°F. Lower emissions, extended paving season. Similar performance to HMA.
Used at ambient temperature. Mainly for repairs and patching. Not suitable for high-traffic areas.
Allows water drainage. Reduces runoff and flooding. Requires special base preparation.
| Application | Thickness | Base Required |
|---|---|---|
| Overlay/Resurfacing | 1.5-2" | Existing surface |
| Residential driveway | 2-3" | 4-6" gravel |
| Heavy residential | 3-4" | 6-8" gravel |
| Commercial parking | 4-6" | 8-12" gravel |
One ton of asphalt covers approximately 80 sq ft at 2" thick, 53 sq ft at 3" thick, or 40 sq ft at 4" thick.
Properly installed and maintained asphalt driveways last 15-20 years. Commercial surfaces may last 20-25 years with regular maintenance.
Spring through fall when temperatures are consistently above 50°F. Asphalt needs warm temperatures to compact properly.
Wait at least 24-48 hours for light traffic. Heavy vehicles should wait 3-5 days. Full curing takes 6-12 months.
