For a 3-foot wide panel, use about 4-5 screws per linear foot of panel. This means approximately 80 screws per roofing square (100 sq ft). Always use screws with rubber/EPDM washers for waterproofing.
Most metal roofing can be installed on roofs with a minimum pitch of 3:12 (14 degrees). Standing seam metal roofing with proper sealant can go as low as 1:12 for certain applications. Always check manufacturer specifications.
Side overlaps are typically 1-2 inches (one rib). End overlaps should be 6 inches minimum for standard pitches, increasing to 8-12 inches for low-slope applications. Apply sealant in all overlaps for low-slope roofs.
You can install metal roofing over one layer of asphalt shingles with proper furring strips for ventilation. However, removing old roofing allows inspection of the deck and ensures proper underlayment installation. Check local building codes.
Quality metal roofing lasts 40-70+ years depending on material: galvanized steel (25-40 years), Galvalume (40-60 years), aluminum (40-70+ years), copper (70-100+ years). Proper installation and maintenance maximize lifespan.
