Calculate the tons, bags, and cost of sand for pavers, play areas, masonry, and construction projects.
Cubic Yards = (Area sq ft × Depth inches) ÷ 324
Tons = Cubic Yards × 1.4 (typical for sand)
50 lb Bags = (Tons × 2000) ÷ 50
One ton of sand covers approximately 150 sq ft at 1" depth, or 75 sq ft at 2" depth.
| Depth | Coverage per Ton | Common Use |
|---|---|---|
| 1/2" | ~300 sq ft | Paver joints |
| 1" | ~150 sq ft | Paver bedding |
| 2" | ~75 sq ft | Play area base |
| 4" | ~35 sq ft | Sandbox |
For a 1" bedding layer, you need approximately 1 ton per 150 sq ft. A 100 sq ft patio requires about 0.67 tons or 27 fifty-pound bags.
There are 40 fifty-pound bags in a ton of sand (2,000 lbs ÷ 50 lbs = 40 bags).
They're often the same product. Mason sand is slightly finer and washed more thoroughly for masonry work, but both work well for paver bedding.
A sandbox should have 4-6 inches of sand for adequate play depth. Most sand will compact, so start with 6 inches.
