| Measurement | Conversion Factor | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Glucose | 1 mmol/L = 18 mg/dL | 5.5 mmol/L = 99 mg/dL |
| Cholesterol | 1 mmol/L = 38.67 mg/dL | 5.0 mmol/L = 193.35 mg/dL |
| Weight | 1 kg = 2.20462 lbs | 70 kg = 154.32 lbs |
| Temperature | °F = (°C × 9/5) + 32 | 37°C = 98.6°F |
Each substance has a different molecular weight. Glucose (molecular weight 180) uses factor 18, while cholesterol (molecular weight 387) uses 38.67.
Both systems are equally accurate when properly calibrated. The International System (SI units like mmol/L) is based on molar concentration, while conventional units (mg/dL) measure mass concentration.
Check your lab report - units are always listed next to the values. US labs typically use mg/dL, while international labs commonly use mmol/L.
