Calculate ABI to screen for peripheral artery disease (PAD)
ABI = Ankle SBP / Higher Arm SBP
Measure using Doppler ultrasound at dorsalis pedis and posterior tibial arteries.
The Ankle Brachial Index is a simple, non-invasive test that compares blood pressure at the ankle to blood pressure in the arm. In healthy individuals, ankle pressure is similar to or slightly higher than arm pressure (ABI ≈1.0).
When arteries in the legs become narrowed by atherosclerosis (PAD), blood pressure at the ankle drops, resulting in a lower ABI. An ABI <0.9 is diagnostic for PAD and also indicates increased risk for heart attack and stroke.
