Reference guide for common antibiotic dosing (prescription required)
Antibiotic resistance is a global health crisis. Misuse and overuse of antibiotics has led to drug-resistant "superbugs." Always use antibiotics responsibly.
| Antibiotic | Common Uses | Key Considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Amoxicillin | Strep throat, ear infections, sinus infections | First-line for many infections; penicillin allergy precaution |
| Azithromycin | Respiratory infections, chlamydia | Short course; QT prolongation risk |
| Doxycycline | Lyme disease, acne, STIs, respiratory | Sun sensitivity; avoid in pregnancy/children under 8 |
| Cipro/Levofloxacin | UTIs, respiratory, GI infections | Black box warnings; reserve for serious infections |
| Bactrim | UTIs, MRSA skin infections | Sulfa allergy; avoid in pregnancy at term |
| Metronidazole | C. diff, bacterial vaginosis, parasites | NO ALCOHOL; metallic taste common |
Stopping early allows surviving bacteria—often the most resistant ones—to multiply. This can cause a relapse that's harder to treat and contributes to antibiotic resistance. Even if you feel better, complete the full course unless your doctor specifically tells you to stop.
It depends on the antibiotic. Metronidazole and tinidazole cause severe reactions with alcohol (nausea, vomiting, rapid heartbeat). Most other antibiotics don't have direct interactions, but alcohol can worsen side effects and impair your immune system's ability to fight infection.
Colds and most respiratory infections are caused by viruses. Antibiotics only work against bacteria and are completely ineffective against viruses. Using them unnecessarily contributes to resistance and exposes you to side effects with no benefit.
Many alternative antibiotics exist for penicillin-allergic patients, including azithromycin, doxycycline, and fluoroquinolones. About 90% of people who think they're allergic to penicillin actually aren't (based on testing). If you haven't had testing, discuss with your allergist.
