The Chinese Gender Prediction Chart is said to be over 700 years old, reportedly discovered in a royal tomb near Beijing. According to legend, the chart was used by the Chinese royal family to help ensure the birth of sons who could carry on the family name and legacy.
The chart is based on the Chinese lunar calendar and considers two factors: the mother's lunar age at conception and the lunar month of conception. Lunar age is calculated differently than Western age—a person is considered 1 year old at birth and gains another year each Chinese New Year.
While the chart has cultural significance and remains popular for entertainment, scientific studies have consistently shown that it's no more accurate than flipping a coin. The sex of a baby is determined by chromosomes (XX for female, XY for male) at the moment of fertilization.
In Chinese tradition, age is calculated differently than in Western countries:
For example, a baby born in December would turn 2 years old (in lunar age) just a few weeks later at Chinese New Year, even though they're only weeks old by Western calculation.
A sonographer can often identify the baby's sex during the anatomy scan. Accuracy is about 95-99% depending on baby's position and gestational age.
Non-invasive prenatal testing analyzes fetal DNA in mother's blood. Over 99% accurate for sex determination.
Chorionic villus sampling tests placental tissue. 100% accurate but invasive, so not recommended just for sex determination.
Tests amniotic fluid. 100% accurate but invasive, typically done for genetic testing rather than sex determination.
Scientific studies show the Chinese Gender Predictor is about 50% accurate—no better than flipping a coin. Despite claims of higher accuracy, there's no evidence that the mother's age or conception month influence a baby's sex.

Methods like the Shettles method (timing intercourse) have no scientific backing. The only reliable method is through IVF with preimplantation genetic testing (PGT), which is typically only used for medical reasons.
The father's sperm determines the baby's sex. Eggs always carry an X chromosome, while sperm can carry either an X (resulting in a girl) or Y (resulting in a boy). It's essentially random which sperm fertilizes the egg.
