West Haven Criteria for grading hepatic encephalopathy severity
No clinical symptoms. Abnormalities detected only on psychometric testing.
Monitor. Consider lactulose if impacting quality of life.
Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is a brain dysfunction caused by liver insufficiency and/or portosystemic shunting. Ammonia accumulation leads to astrocyte swelling and neurological symptoms. The West Haven Criteria grades severity from minimal/covert to coma.
