Assess your resting heart rate and cardiovascular fitness level
Measure first thing in the morning before getting up
Resting heart rate (RHR) is the number of times your heart beats per minute when you're at complete rest. It's a key indicator of cardiovascular fitness and overall heart health. A lower resting heart rate generally indicates more efficient heart function and better cardiovascular fitness.
For most adults, a normal resting heart rate ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute (bpm). Well-trained athletes often have RHR below 60 bpm, sometimes as low as 40 bpm, due to their heart's increased efficiency.
A good resting heart rate is typically between 60-70 bpm for most adults. Athletes may have RHR between 40-60 bpm. Lower generally indicates better cardiovascular fitness.
Consult a doctor if your RHR is consistently above 100 bpm (tachycardia) or below 40 bpm without being an athlete, or if you experience palpitations, dizziness, or shortness of breath.
Regular aerobic exercise is the most effective way to lower RHR. Other methods include stress reduction, adequate sleep, staying hydrated, and limiting caffeine and alcohol.
