Visualize step-by-step long addition with column alignment, carry digits highlighted in red, and detailed explanation of each addition step. Perfect for learning multi-digit addition.
Enter two numbers to see the visual addition
Type your first number in the top field and your second number in the bottom field. The calculator works with any size numbers, from single digits to very large numbers.
The calculator automatically shows the numbers aligned in columns, just like you would write them on paper. Carry digits appear in red above the numbers.
Scroll down to see each step explained in detail, showing exactly how each digit is added and when carries occur. Perfect for learning or checking your work.
Long addition, also known as column addition or vertical addition, is a method for adding multi-digit numbers by aligning them in columns based on place value (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.). This method makes it easier to add large numbers accurately.
Long addition is a method of adding multi-digit numbers by writing them in columns aligned by place value (ones, tens, hundreds) and adding each column from right to left, carrying over when needed. It's called 'long' because the numbers are written vertically in a long format.
We add from right to left because that's the order of place values (ones, tens, hundreds, thousands). This allows us to properly handle carries - when a column sum exceeds 9, we carry the extra value to the next higher place value on the left.
Carrying occurs when the sum of digits in a column is 10 or greater. You write down the ones digit in that column and 'carry' the tens digit to add to the next column on the left. For example, 8 + 7 = 15, so you write 5 and carry 1.
Align the numbers by their rightmost digits (ones place). The shorter number will have empty spaces on the left, which you can think of as zeros. For example, adding 45 + 789 is the same as adding 045 + 789.
Yes! You can add multiple numbers using the same method. Align all numbers by place value, add each column from right to left, and carry when the sum exceeds 9. The process is the same regardless of how many numbers you're adding.
If you have a carry after adding the leftmost column, simply write that carry digit as an additional digit at the beginning of your answer. This means your answer will have one more digit than the longest number you started with.
