Find the closest point on a 3D line to a given point, and calculate the perpendicular distance.
The projection of a point P onto a line is the point Q on the line that is closest to P. The line segment PQ is perpendicular to the line.
Method: If the line is given by A + t·d⃗, we find t by projecting the vector AP⃗ onto the direction vector d⃗.
Applications: Computer graphics, physics simulations, shortest distance calculations, collision detection.
