Solid is one piece of wood (3/4" thick typically). Engineered has a real wood veneer over plywood layers - more stable, can go over concrete, often pre-finished.
Prefinished is convenient - install and use immediately. Unfinished allows custom stain colors and seamless finish but requires 2-3 days for finish to cure.
Nail-down for wood subfloors (most common). Glue-down for concrete or when you want no squeaks. Floating is not recommended for solid hardwood.
10% for straight installs, 15% for diagonal, 20% for herringbone/chevron. Keep extra boards for future repairs - matching can be impossible later.
Possible but not ideal. Water damage is a risk. Engineered hardwood or water-resistant species (teak, white oak) are better choices. Keep mats at sinks.
