Convert linear feet to square feet for lumber, flooring, decking, and other materials. Enter the length and width to calculate total coverage area.
Square Feet = Linear Feet x Width (in feet)
0 linear feet x 0.00 inches wide
= 0 x 0.0000 ft = 0.00 sq ft

If your width is in inches, divide by 12 first to convert to feet.
100 linear feet of 2x6 lumber:
100 x (5.5 / 12) = 100 x 0.4583
= 45.83 square feet
| Material | Nominal Size | Actual Width | Sq Ft per Linear Ft |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dimensional Lumber | 2x4 | 3.5 inches | 0.292 |
| Dimensional Lumber | 2x6 | 5.5 inches | 0.458 |
| Dimensional Lumber | 2x8 | 7.25 inches | 0.604 |
| Dimensional Lumber | 2x10 | 9.25 inches | 0.771 |
| Dimensional Lumber | 2x12 | 11.25 inches | 0.938 |
| Deck Board | 5/4 x 6 | 5.5 inches | 0.458 |
| Fence Picket | 1x6 | 5.5 inches | 0.458 |
Linear feet measures length only (one dimension). Square feet measures area (length x width, two dimensions). Linear feet is used for pricing materials like lumber, while square feet measures coverage.
Lumber is sized when rough-cut and wet. After drying and planing, it shrinks. A 2x4 starts at 2 inches by 4 inches but ends up at 1.5 x 3.5 inches actual size.
Multiply linear feet of deck boards by the board width. A 16-foot 5.5-inch wide deck board covers 16 x 0.458 = 7.33 square feet. Add 10-15% for waste and cuts.
For decking and fencing with gaps, subtract the gap width from your coverage calculation, or simply add 5-10% extra to your waste factor.
For most projects, add 10% for waste. For complex layouts, angled cuts, or patterns, add 15-20%. For flooring in irregular rooms, consider adding even more.
Siding is often sold by the square (100 sq ft). Calculate total linear feet times width, divide by 100, then add 10-15% waste for a square count.
