Calculate the sod rolls, pallets, and cost needed for your new lawn installation.
Sod (also called turf) is pre-grown grass with a layer of soil held together by roots. It provides an instant lawn compared to seeding, which can take weeks to establish. Sod is sold in rolls or pallets and should be installed within 24-48 hours of delivery.
Rolls Needed = (Area × (1 + Waste%)) ÷ Roll Size
Pallets = Total Sq Ft ÷ 500
Standard sod rolls are 2 feet × 5 feet (10 sq ft). A pallet typically contains 450-700 sq ft depending on the supplier. Always add 5-10% for waste from cutting and fitting.
A typical pallet contains 50-70 rolls (500-700 sq ft) for standard 2×5 ft rolls. Pallet sizes vary by supplier.
A standard 2×5 ft roll of sod weighs 15-30 pounds depending on moisture content. A full pallet weighs 1,500-2,000 lbs.
Spring and fall are ideal when temperatures are mild (55-75°F). Avoid laying sod in extreme heat or freezing conditions.
Sod typically roots in 2-3 weeks with proper watering. Avoid heavy use for 3-4 weeks until fully established.
