Assess your hemoglobin level and check for anemia or elevated levels
Hemoglobin (Hb) is the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from your lungs to the rest of your body and returns carbon dioxide back to the lungs. It's what gives blood its red color.
Low hemoglobin (anemia) means your tissues aren't getting enough oxygen, which can cause fatigue, weakness, and shortness of breath. High hemoglobin (polycythemia) can make blood thicker and increase the risk of blood clots.
Testosterone stimulates red blood cell production, giving men naturally higher hemoglobin. Women also lose iron through menstruation, which can lower hemoglobin.
Hemoglobin below 7-8 g/dL is concerning and may require transfusion. Values below 10 g/dL usually warrant investigation. Always consult a doctor for persistent low values.
Depending on the cause: iron-rich foods (red meat, beans, spinach), vitamin C to enhance iron absorption, B12 and folate supplementation, or treating the underlying condition.
