Calculate Transferrin Saturation (TSAT) to assess iron availability
Normal: 60-170 mcg/dL
Normal: 250-400 mcg/dL
TSAT (%) = (Serum Iron / TIBC) × 100
Transferrin saturation (TSAT) measures what percentage of transferrin (the iron transport protein) is bound to iron. It reflects the amount of iron available for red blood cell production and other cellular functions.
TSAT is calculated by dividing serum iron by Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC). Low TSAT suggests iron deficiency, while high TSAT may indicate iron overload. Interpreting TSAT alongside ferritin provides a more complete picture of iron status.
| Condition | Serum Iron | TIBC | TSAT | Ferritin |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Deficiency | ↓ | ↑ | ↓ | ↓ |
| Chronic Disease | ↓ | ↓ | Normal/↓ | ↑ |
| Hemochromatosis | ↑ | Normal/↓ | ↑↑ | ↑↑ |
| Thalassemia | ↑ | Normal | ↑ | ↑ |
