Assess your Total Iron Binding Capacity to evaluate iron status
Normal: 250-400 mcg/dL
TIBC measures the blood's capacity to bind iron with transferrin. It reflects the amount of transferrin available to bind iron. High TIBC indicates iron deficiency, while low TIBC suggests iron overload or chronic disease.
TIBC = Total iron binding capacity (all binding sites)
UIBC = Unsaturated IBC (empty binding sites)
TIBC = Serum Iron + UIBC
Total Iron Binding Capacity (TIBC) measures the maximum amount of iron that blood proteins can bind. It primarily reflects transferrin levels, the main iron-transport protein. When iron stores are low, the liver produces more transferrin, increasing TIBC.
TIBC is inversely related to iron stores: iron deficiency increases TIBC (more transport protein produced to capture iron), while iron overload or chronic disease decreases TIBC.
