Not all reactions are true allergies:
Common side effects (NOT allergy):
Possible allergy (report to doctor):
Even though symptoms often improve in 2-3 days, bacteria may still be present. Stopping early allows remaining bacteria to survive and potentially develop resistance. For strep throat, completing 10 days also prevents rheumatic fever, a serious complication.
If vomiting occurs within 30 minutes of the dose, you can give another full dose. If it's been longer than 30 minutes, most of the medication has been absorbed—don't re-dose. If vomiting persists, contact your doctor as they may need to switch antibiotics.
Yes, amoxicillin can be taken with dairy products including milk, formula, or yogurt. Unlike some antibiotics, amoxicillin absorption is not significantly affected by dairy. In fact, taking it with food can help reduce stomach upset.
High-dose amoxicillin (80-90 mg/kg/day) is used when resistant bacteria are suspected, such as in children who: attend daycare, recently took antibiotics, have recurrent infections, or live in areas with high resistance rates. The standard dose (40-50 mg/kg/day) works for most uncomplicated infections.
After the pharmacist mixes it, store liquid amoxicillin in the refrigerator. It's good for 14 days. Shake well before each dose. Don't freeze it. Some formulations can be stored at room temperature—check your specific product label.
Mild diarrhea is a common side effect and doesn't require stopping the medication. You can give probiotics 2 hours apart from antibiotics to help. However, contact your doctor if diarrhea is severe, bloody, or persists after finishing the antibiotic, as this could indicate C. difficile infection.
No. Amoxicillin only works against bacterial infections. It will not help with viral infections like common colds, flu, most sore throats, or most coughs. Using antibiotics for viral infections contributes to antibiotic resistance and can cause unnecessary side effects.
