Calculate the standard deviation (σ or s) to measure the spread of data from the mean.
Data points cluster closely around the mean. High consistency in the data.
Data has typical spread. Values are reasonably distributed around the mean.
Data is widely spread. Values are far from the mean, indicating high variability.
Standard deviation is the square root of variance. While variance gives squared units, standard deviation is in the same units as the original data, making it easier to interpret.
Use population (σ) when you have data for the entire group you're studying. Use sample (s) when your data is a subset of a larger population, which is more common in practice.
