Convert area in square meters to linear meters for ordering fabric, carpet, flooring, and other roll materials. Calculate how much material to buy.
Linear Meters = Area / Width
| Material Width | Linear m per 10 m2 | With 10% Waste |
|---|---|---|
| 53 cm (wallpaper) | 18.9 m | 20.8 m |
| 90 cm (narrow fabric) | 11.1 m | 12.2 m |
| 110 cm (standard fabric) | 9.1 m | 10.0 m |
| 150 cm (wide fabric) | 6.7 m | 7.3 m |
| 2 m (vinyl/turf) | 5.0 m | 5.5 m |
| 4 m (wide carpet) | 2.5 m | 2.8 m |
Divide the area in square meters by the material width in meters. For example, 15 m2 / 1.5m width = 10 linear meters needed.
Waste accounts for pattern matching, cutting losses, and mistakes. Add 10% for solid colors, 15-20% for patterns, and 20-25% for complex patterns or directional fabrics.
Add up the total area of all rooms in square meters, then convert to linear meters. Add your waste factor to the total.
Always round up. Material is cut from rolls and sold by the meter. Its better to have a little extra than to run short.
For patterns, you need extra material to align the pattern. Add the pattern repeat height to each cut length. Ask the supplier for the pattern repeat measurement.
Measure the rise and run of each step, add them together plus an extra 5cm overlap per step. Multiply by the number of steps and add extra for the landing.
