Tape Test Information: If you exceed screening weight, body fat is measured using circumference measurements. Males: neck and abdomen. Females: neck, waist, and hips. The measurements are used with height to calculate body fat percentage.
The Army Body Composition Program (ABCP) ensures all soldiers maintain appropriate body composition for health, fitness, and professional appearance. The program uses a two-step process:
Soldiers who fail to meet body composition standards are enrolled in the ABCP and must:
The program emphasizes healthy weight loss (3-8 pounds per month) rather than rapid reduction. Soldiers are given adequate time to meet standards through proper diet and exercise.
Height and weight assessments are conducted at least twice per year in conjunction with the ACFT. Additional assessments may be required for soldiers in the ABCP or at commander's discretion.
The tape test accounts for this. Many muscular soldiers exceed screening weight but pass the body fat assessment. If you pass the tape test, you meet body composition standards even if over screening weight.
Yes, repeated failure to meet body composition standards can result in separation from the Army. However, the process includes multiple opportunities for improvement through the ABCP before separation is initiated.
Yes, pregnant soldiers are exempt from body composition assessments. Postpartum soldiers have up to 12 months after delivery to meet standards, with interim goals at 6 and 9 months.
Measurements are taken with a tape measure at specific sites. Males: neck at the smallest point, abdomen at navel level. Females: neck at smallest point, natural waist, and hips at largest point. All measurements are recorded to nearest 0.5 inch.
You'll be enrolled in the ABCP with a personalized weight loss plan, nutrition counseling, and monthly progress assessments. You'll also be flagged, which can affect promotions, schools, and awards.
Medical conditions that affect weight may warrant temporary exemption or modified standards. However, medical exemptions don't eliminate the requirement - they provide time to address underlying issues.
The tape test provides a reasonable estimate of body fat but isn't as accurate as methods like DEXA scans or hydrostatic weighing. However, it's practical for large-scale military application and correlates well with health outcomes.
