Assess your white blood cell count and understand your immune system status
White blood cells (leukocytes) are your immune system's defense cells. They fight infections and foreign invaders.
White blood cells (WBCs or leukocytes) are the cells of your immune system. They protect your body against infections and foreign substances. A complete blood count with differential measures both total WBC count and the proportions of different types of white cells.
The five types of WBCs each have specific functions: neutrophils fight bacteria, lymphocytes handle viral infections and immunity, monocytes clean up debris, eosinophils combat parasites and allergies, and basophils are involved in allergic reactions.
First responders to bacterial infections. They engulf and destroy bacteria.
Handle viral infections, produce antibodies, and provide long-term immunity.
Clean up damaged cells and present antigens to lymphocytes. Become macrophages in tissues.
Combat parasites and are involved in allergic responses. Elevated in allergies and parasitic infections.
Release histamine during allergic reactions. The rarest type of WBC.
