A GPA of 3.0 or higher is generally considered good. A 3.5+ is excellent and competitive for scholarships. A 3.7+ is outstanding and highly competitive for top universities. However, what's 'good' depends on your goals and field of study.
GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, adding all these values together, then dividing by the total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course contributes 12 grade points.
Unweighted GPA uses the standard 4.0 scale where an A is always 4.0. Weighted GPA gives extra points for honors, AP, or IB classes (often adding 0.5 or 1.0 point), so weighted GPAs can exceed 4.0. Use our High School GPA Calculator for weighted calculations.
Most schools use the 4.0 scale, but some variations exist. Some schools don't use plus/minus grades. Others may have different percentage ranges for letter grades. Always check your school's specific grading policy.
Courses with more credit hours have a larger impact on your GPA. A poor grade in a 4-credit course hurts more than the same grade in a 1-credit course. Similarly, high grades in higher-credit courses boost your GPA more.

Dean's List requirements vary by school but typically require a GPA between 3.5 and 3.8 for a semester. Some schools also require completing a minimum number of credit hours. Check your school's specific requirements.
Take more credit hours and earn high grades in them. A 4.0 in a 4-credit course will raise your GPA more than a 4.0 in a 1-credit course. Focus on getting A's in your remaining classes, especially those with more credits.
Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardized way to measure academic achievement. The 4.0 scale is most common in the United States, where an A equals 4.0, B equals 3.0, C equals 2.0, D equals 1.0, and F equals 0.0. Plus and minus grades add or subtract 0.3 points (except A+ which is still 4.0).
GPA is important for several reasons: it determines academic standing, eligibility for Dean's List and honors, qualification for scholarships, and admission to graduate programs. Many employers also consider GPA when hiring recent graduates.
