Test Score % = (Correct Answers ÷ Total Questions) × 100
If you got 42 correct out of 50 questions:
Divide the number of correct answers by the total number of questions, then multiply by 100 to get the percentage. For example, 18 correct out of 20 total = (18 ÷ 20) × 100 = 90%.
15 out of 20 is 75%, which is a C grade on the standard grading scale. This is calculated as (15 ÷ 20) × 100 = 75%.
To get an A (90% or higher), you can miss up to 10% of the questions. On a 20-question test, you can miss 2 questions. On a 50-question test, you can miss 5 questions.
Most schools consider 60% or 70% as passing. A grade below this threshold (usually D or F) typically means you need to retake the test or need additional help with the material.
This calculator is designed for questions that are either right or wrong. If you have partial credit, convert your points to a decimal. For example, if you got 2.5 points on a 3-point question, enter 2.5 as correct answers.
Use our Final Grade Calculator to determine what score you need on your final exam. It considers your current grade, the final exam weight, and your desired grade to show what you need.
If questions have different point values, use the regular Grade Calculator instead. Enter your total points earned and total points possible rather than counting individual questions.
On the standard grading scale, 80-89% is a B. However, some schools or teachers may use a different grading scale. Some use 93% as the cutoff for an A, while others use 90%. Check with your teacher for their specific scale.
Test grades are typically calculated as the percentage of correct answers out of the total number of questions. This straightforward approach treats each question as worth the same number of points, making it easy to calculate your score quickly.
The standard letter grade scale converts percentages to letter grades: A (90-100%), B (80-89%), C (70-79%), D (60-69%), and F (below 60%). Some instructors use plus and minus grades for more granular assessment, such as A- for 90-92% and A+ for 98-100%.
