Calculate or assess Mean Corpuscular Volume - the average size of red blood cells
MCV = (Hct × 10) ÷ RBC
MCV in femtoliters (fL)
Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) measures the average size of your red blood cells in femtoliters (fL). It's one of the most useful indices for classifying and diagnosing anemia.
MCV helps narrow down the cause of anemia: microcytic anemia (small cells) suggests iron deficiency or thalassemia, while macrocytic anemia (large cells) suggests B12 or folate deficiency. Normocytic anemia can have many causes including acute blood loss and chronic disease.
